Launched in 2024, Happy Children in Healthy Families (HCHF) is KROSS's renewed initiative responding to factors affecting child well-being gathered from three decades of community work.
Family Strengthening Services (FSS) are vital to nurture children inside a secure family environment, preventing unnecessary placement in institutions. Keeping children with their families—or reuniting them at the earliest—guarantees superior long-term emotional and physical development.
Under HCHF, KROSS collects primary and secondary data on vulnerable child living conditions across all 32 districts of Karnataka. On a pilot basis, we partner with selected Diocesan Social Service Societies (DSSS) to roll out family-strengthening programs.
Promoting family-based care, strengthening local parenting networks, and helping children grow up in safe and loving homes.
Poverty, unemployment, low family income, and lack of resources.
Broken families, single parenting, domestic abuse, and neglect.
Poor educational systems and geographic barriers to schools.
Forced migration for daily wage work affecting child stability.

Child protection varies across Karnataka due to regional imbalance, poverty, and geographical barriers. To address this, KROSS is commissioning an external consultancy to execute a comprehensive study of the state's child protection ecosystem.
Research Methods: Key Informant Interviews (KIIs), Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), field observations, and Participatory Rural Appraisals (PRA) assessing gatekeeping, alternative care systems, and push/pull factors of institutionalization.
Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) are vital community assets with long-standing credibility. Churches, dioceses, and religious institutions are uniquely positioned to advocate for family value strengthening.
In this pilot phase, KROSS engages with parish priests, Bishops, diocesan family and youth commissions, parish councils, and basic Christian communities. By building a network of "Champions for Child Protection", we influence family-based care, prevent unnecessary separation, and aid the safe reunification of children into families.
